Australia

Climate

Australian seasons are opposed to the ones observed in the northern hemisphere. Winter hits from late June to early September, and summer between December and March. Its subtropical location and cold waters off the Indian Ocean coastline make most of western Australia a hot desert with aridity a marked feature of a larger part of the continent. However, the climatic variations are very wide across the continent. The Southern part of the country, where most of the main cities - Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide - are located, has cold winters (less than 10 °C), especially in Tasmania and in the mountains, where snowfalls can periodically happen, and mildly warm summers, around 20-25 °C. Heading off to the north, variations are less noticeable. The Red Center is subject to extremely high temperatures on summer daytime and can skyrocket to 45 °C, though winters are still hot with a roughly 20 °C. As for every desert, temperatures dramatically drop at night and can fall under 0°C. Also, a dust storm will sporadically blanket a region. In the tropical Top End area (Darwin, Cairns), the year is divided between two seasons; winter is hot and very humid (around 22 °C with a 70% humidity ratio), and summer hot and dry (around 30 °C). The latter is associated with frequent and violent thunderstorms and monsoons.

The best time to travel to Australia often depends on your exact destination, but overall spring (from September to November) offers the best climatic background. At any price, the wet season should be avoided in the north, as much as summer in the Red Center where the scorching heat can be a huge turn off.
