Self drive tour in Iceland

This unforgettable tour focuses on Iceland’s number one attraction – the unrivaled nature. Experience all the wonders of south and west Iceland, including hot spring areas, mystical glaciers and picturesque waterfalls. The duration of this tour is 7 days and 6 nights. The accommodation offered is all with private facilities for your convenience. Towering mountains, powerful geysers and deep fjords pave this surreal trip throughout one of the wildest lands of the planet.

This tour covers all the attractions found in the south and west part of Iceland. You are never in more then 2-3 hours drive from Reykjavik. Also, even if you cover a great deal of Iceland within a short period, you still have the flexibility to decide how short/long your travel days are.

Day 1| International flight

Day 2| Arrival in Reykjavik
Explore Reykjavik, the northernmost capital in the world.
Arrival and overnight in Reykjavik (transfer from international airport not included).

Day 3| Hvalfjörður - Borgarfjörður - Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Picturesque Fjords - Craters - Volcanic Landscapes - Snæfellsnes Glacier
Approximate mileage: ca. 280 km / 174 miles
Travel via Hvalfjörður fjord to the agricultural region of Borgarfjörður. You will drive past the magnificent Eldborg crater on route to Snæfellsnes peninsula where the mysterious Snæfellsjökull glacier towers over the surrounding area.
Optional: Snow scooter tour on Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Day 4| Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Sea Cliffs with Birdlife - Rock Formations - Quaint Fishing Villages
Approximate mileage: ca. 150 km / 93 miles
Explore the countless natural wonders of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Visit Arnarstapi sea cliffs with its varied birdlife and the rocky beach of Djúpalónssandur before driving along the north coast through lively fishing villages.
Optional: Boat tour from Stykkishólmur.

Day 5| Borgarfjörður Area - Þingvellir - Geysir - Gullfoss
Europe's Most Powerful Hot Spring - National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO) - Exploding Geysers
Approximate mileage: ca. 280 km / 174 miles
Visit the historic site of Reykholt, the remarkably beautiful Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Continue to Þingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Icelandic parliament and a jewel of nature (4WD needed for Kaldidalur valley). End the day with a visit to the famous Geysir hot-spring area and the massive Gullfoss waterfall.

Day 6| South coast
Mýrdalsjökull Glacier - Sea Cliffs with Puffin Colony - Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore
Approximate mileage: ca. 430 km / 267 miles
Discover the south shore, viewing the spectacular Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the black sand beaches around Vík. Visit Dyrhólaey* headland where thousands of puffins nest every summer. Return to Reykjavík.
*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season in spring, from ca. middle May til June 23rd
Optional: kayak tour from Stokkseyri; boat tour to the Westman Islands.

Day 7| Reykjanes Peninsula - Blue Lagoon
Volcanic Landscapes - Bubbling Mud Pools - Quaint Fishing Village - Geothermal Spa
Approximate mileage: ca. 130 km / 81 miles
Drive to Reykjanes peninsula and visit the moon like surrounding of Lake Kleifarvatn and Krýsuvík geothermal area with bubbling mud pools. Visit Grindavík fishing village and the famous Blue Lagoon for a relaxing dip in the pleasantly warm geothermal waters, rich in silica and minerals that are great for the skin.
Optional: Bathing in the Blue Lagoon, in-water massage at the Blue Lagoon.
