Corsica

Climate

Located in the heart of the Gulf of Genoa and swayed by the mountainous relief, the climate naturally features both marine and mountain influences. The rapid changes in altitude between the coast and the tops of rocky ridges that dominate the hinterland induce marked contrasts in both temperatures and precipitation. The coastal Mediterranean climate that prevails on the coast and within the lower valleys is characterized by extreme warm temperatures, a pronounced summer drought period (maximum of 35 ° C and an average of 25 ° C in water) and moderate rainfall (600-800 mm / year). However, these temperatures change relatively rapidly with altitude: orographic conditions favor a transition to a mountain climate with alpine influences, with larger temperature differences and, above all, abundant rainfall (800 to 2000 mm / year) in the form of rain and even snow.

The abundance of rainfall is a key feature of the Corsican climate between October and the end of spring, and it is explained by the arrival of air masses loaded with moisture brought by sea breezes coming up against the reliefs:

- The Libeccio (southwest sector, sweet summer) and maestrale (northwest sector) are violent, dry winds in summer;

- The Serra de Tramuntana (northerly wind to the northeast), violent and cold, which, when prevalent in winter, then brings rain and sometimes snow;

- The Grecale (wind from the east and southeast, typically from the Tyrrhenian sea), and especially the Sirocco (southerly wind), warm and humid, which often carries dust from North Africa.
