Corsica

Geography

The island of Corsica is marked by a central chain of mountains: Mont Cinto is the highest peak, reaching to 2706m, while more than 30 summits surpass 2000m.  In the north, the Golo and the Tavignano are two major rivers.  The principal cities of Haute-Corse are Bastia and Calvi on the coast and Corte in the mountainous centre.   Further south, in Corse du Sud, Ajaccio, Bonifacio; Porto-Vecchio and Sartene are the largest towns.

The Corsican beaches created the reputation as the Island of Beauty.  On the west coast, from the Gulf of Porto  to Bonifacio; the inlets follow the winding roads, and heading from Porto-Vecchio towards the north, until Solaro, you can easily find a quiet spot to swim.

In the centre of the Island the regional park service manages the renowned GR20, or “Fra li Monti” (to cross the mountains), a 200km long hiking trail, broken into 16 stages reserved for experienced walkers.  From Calenzana near Calvi, to Conca near to Porto Vecchio, it is a legendary trail both due to its beauty and the difficulty in its undertaking. Short hikes of one day or a few hours are possible as well as excursions in the company of experienced park rangers, try: Alta Rocca, Boziu, or Taravo.

Corsica teems with trails appealing to all abilities and easy walks can be found near Lake Melo and Lake Capitello, or along the seaside near the Sanguinaire Islands around Ajaccio.  Amongst the fields of chestnut trees, through the olive groves, and even along the ridgelines the sheer quantity of nice trails will leave each group of walkers with a winding trail to themselves.
