  • Custom travel in India : from Rajasthan to Kerala

 - A country of paradoxes, India has fascinated the West for centuries with its eclecticism and its ancient culture rooted in tradition…complex, hard and happy, all at the same time. The West never really knows which door to enter into this world of divinities, where aestheticism is omnipresent... This customized trip to India provides you with an opportunity to discover parts of both North India and South India.

After discovering Rajasthan (with its havelis and numerous forts and palaces), you’ll head to Varanasi by land and experience the world of Indian trains; a high plateau region where you’ll find dense forest and a few tiger reserves and, above all, you will see Orchha and Khajuraho, famous for their erotic sculpture temples. Continue your discovery along the Ganges to the enchanting and ancient city of Varanasi. A magical place that touches all, a city bustling with activity, where death and life intertwine along the span of the Ghats.

Next, it’s on to Kerala, considered to be the most tolerant of all of the states of the great Indian republic. Christians, Hindus and Muslims have lived together for centuries without conflict. With its lush forests, its coconut tree-lined canals, its spice and tea plantations, its beaches and its mountains, sanctuaries for their omnipresent wildlife, Kerala has emerged as a paradise and is undoubtedly the ideal point of entry into the Indian subcontinent. Finally, Mysore and Bangalore will provide you with a brief overview of the state of Karnataka.

  • Day 7 | Udaipur (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Day devoted to the 'City of Dawn', the most romantic of all of Rajasthan. The city of sun princes is undoubtedly the most romantic city of Rajasthan. Located on the banks of Lake Pichola, it conceals its lively narrow streets, its colourful temples, white-hot houses, small palaces and beautiful havelis that have preserved their ancient charms. Visit City Palace, an imposing structure built in the 16th century. It is a maze of interlacing staircases, courtyards, terraces, patios and verandas, with amazing consistency considering that the palace was continuously enlarged by a succession of numerous Maharajas. Just 150m north of the City Palace entrance is Jagdish Temple, a splendid Indo-Aryan temple which attracts worshippers in pilgrimages to pay homage to Lord Vishnu and Shiva. Continue on to Saheliyon Ki Bari, the bridesmaids garden, just north of the city. The small garden features fountains, kiosks, marble elephants and a delightful lotus pool. Return to hotel in the early afternoon.

We have designed the itinerary to provide some free time between 12:30pm and 4pm to wander the bustling streets of Udaipur, or to relax at Udai Kothi.

In the late afternoon, depart your hotel for a cruise on Lake Pichola. Beautiful ochre tints colour the late afternoon, and life unfolds along the Ghats. City Palace appears to float above the water. Finally, you’ll approach the legendary Taj Lake Palace, former summer residence of the Maharajas.

  • Day 8 | Udaipur - Chittorgarh - Shahpura (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart by road for Shahpura, stopping at Chittorgarh, the ancient capital of Mewar. Visit Fort Chittor, an actual city with temples, palaces, mansions and pools that you will delightfully discover after passing through an impressive series of seven gates.

  • Day 9 | Shahpura - Pushkar - Jaipur (B)

Breakfast at hotel. In the morning, depart by road for Jaipur.

En route, stop at Pushkar, famous for its annual festival. The village is scenically situated on a lakeshore surrounded by sand dunes. You can admire a temple dedicated to Brahma, the god of creation. Continue on to Jaipur, hotel check-in and rest of day at leisure.

  • Day 10 | Jaipur (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart your hotel for the Hawa Mahal, the palace of winds, the city’s most famous structure. Built in the 18th century, its tall and beautiful pyramidal facade features hundreds of bay windows that allowed women of the royal harem to see without being seen (exterior view and photo opportunity).

Next, head towards the Amber Fort. We recommend an ascent by jeep, rather than on elephant back, as the animals are not well treated. Discover the temple of Kali, the goddess of destructive power, numerous courts and the garden of women, the wonderful private audience hall, where oil lamps are lit in winter to reflect off a mirror and warm the room. The Man Singh Palace contains 12 secret passages leading to apartments of the privileged, a picturesque dining room where men and women are separated by a veranda and carved columns.

In the afternoon, depart to visit City Palace, still occupied by the Maharaja and his family, a huge structure which has been converted into museums, courtyards and small palaces featuring richly decorated doors. You will visit the Jaipur observatory, Jantar Mantar, built in the 17th century to include the world’s largest sundial, built in the form of stairs. Free time to explore Jaipur’s markets. Return to hotel.

  • Day 11 | Fathepur Sikri - Agra (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart in the morning for Agra. On the way, visit Fathepur Sikri, the former capital of the Mughal Empire, built by Emperor Akbar in a variety of architectural styles. Of particular note will be the jewellery pavilion and the Astrologer’s kiosk.
Continue on to Agra. Settle into your hotel, then depart for a tour of Red Fort, with its massively high red sandstone walls overlooking the Yamuna River and its large collection of Mughal emperor palaces, true gems of white marble, carved red sandstone and colourful inlaid stones, featuring courtyards, gardens with ponds and mosques. You surely won’t want to miss the tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah, an ornate masterpiece of inlaid semi-precious stones.

  • Day 12 | Taj Mahal - Jhansi - Orccha (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Early morning spent discovering the miraculous white marble splendour of “Taj Mahal”, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz-i Mahal. This monument has the very rare distinction of “coming to life” at different times of the day, so you will have an opportunity to rediscover its immaculate beauty in the morning sun. It took approximately 18 years to complete the structure, which is often referred to as the “marble dream”.

Transfer to Agra railway station for your train ride to Jhansi. Jhansi rose to fame thanks to Rani, the “holy woman” who took a stand against the British during the Indian Mutiny. Greeting at the station before continuing by road to Orccha situated on the banks of the Betwa, former capital of a small state founded by Bit Singh Deo. Orchha’s builders enameled the countryside with palaces and fortresses, temples and cenotaphs. Remainder of the afternoon dedicated to discovering Orchha’s colourful, bustling markets.

  • Day 13 | Khajuraho

Breakfast at hotel. In the morning, depart by road for Khajuraho. It’s here where the Chandela built 85 temples dedicated to the glory of God. Today, only 22 remain, each adorned with a series of sculptures. Early temple visits (depending on arrival time from Orchha).

  • Day 14 | Khajuraho - Flight to Varanasi

Breakfast at hotel. Spend the morning visiting the beautiful temples of Khajuraho, India’s purest expression of art, famed for its erotic sculptures. Admire them…they contain all of India’s sensibilities.

Transfer to Khajuraho airport for your flight to Varanasi. Late afternoon discovery of Varanasi, one of India’s primary religious centres and the most significant for pilgrimages. According to beliefs, Shiva, also known as Vishvanath or “Lord of the World”, presides over Varanasi. Those who die here will find themselves closer to God in the next world. Stroll through the city’s bazaars and alleyways and along the Ghats, where you will attend an evening ceremony (Ganga Aarti).
Day 15 | Varanasi
Breakfast at hotel. Early morning boat ride on the Ganges to witness the rituals of Hindu pilgrims who purify themselves in the river’s sacred waters, or perform cremations on specialized Ghats. Stroll through the Golden Temple district, towards the temple of Durga (watch for monkeys!) and along the edges of Harischandra Ghat, with its rising funeral pyres.
Afternoon dedicated to visiting the workshops of local artisans, with a special focus on weavers. A very authentic Indian experience!

  • Day 16 |  Varanasi - Flight to Kochi

Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to Varanasi airport for your flight to Kochi, via Mumbai. Greeting and transfer to hotel.

  • Day 17 | Kochi (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Kochi is a city rich in the colonial past of Kerala, once occupied in succession by the Portuguese, English, Dutch and French! Depart from your hotel to Satin Francis Church, continuing towards the Chinese fishing nets, visiting the Dutch Palace and finally exploring the Jewish District, home to India’s oldest synagogue, Pardesi Synagogue (closed on Fridays and Saturdays). The district is comprised of old shops, warehouses and cobbled streets that are very pleasant and quite perplexing to explore.
In the late afternoon, take in a Kathakali show where, even though you won’t be staying long, you’ll get
an overview of the makeup techniques and traditional dance of Kerala.
Return to hotel.

  • Day 18 | Pallathurthy – Backwaters boat ride - Kumakarom (B, L)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart for Pallathurthy where you will board a traditional transport vessel used to ship goods like spices and rice. Some of these vessels have been converted into leisure vessels (ketuwallom) that take you through the “backwaters”, or canals bordered by coconut trees, rice fields, villages and traditional homes.
Lunch and tea on board.

  • Day 19 | Cochin – Train to Calicut – Wayanad (B, D)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart for Cochin Railway Station to catch your train to Calicut. Greeting at the station and continue by road to Wayanad. This nature reserve, also known as Muthanga, is a secluded rainforest that borders the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka, as well as the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.

  • Day 20 | Wayanad - Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary - Wayanad (B, L, D)

Breakfast at hotel. Just 30 minutes by car from your hotel, you can visit pepper, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and vanilla plantations, as well as enjoy a tea break with the locals. You’ll also have an opportunity to visit the Tranquil House coffee plantation.
Depart for a Jeep Safari at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, to be reconfirmed on site if weather conditions permit.

  • Day 21 | Wayanad - Mysore (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Late morning departure by road for Mysore. Arrive at hotel.

You’ll visit the produce and flower market, as well as Srirangapatnam, former capital of the Sultans of Mysore.
Then we recommend a visit to Devaraj Market, a colourful local market selling fruits and vegetables, but also flowers and Kumkum powder cones, used to paint the fronts of houses and temples during festivals.

  • Day 23 | Mysore - Bangalore (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Depart by road for Bangalore.
Visit of Srirangapatnam, a great religious, cultural and historic site, visit of Daria Daulat Bagh (Tippu's summer palace) and Gumbaz (burial place of Tippu and his parents).
